Yasiel Puig goes Hollywood in front of a sold-out crowd at Dodgers Stadium with walk-off home run
Los Angeles-In the bottom of the 11th inning with two outs on the scoreboard, Yasiel Puig hit a bombshell out of the ballpark, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds. It was Puig’s first career walk-off home run in the major leagues.
“Just when you think you’ve seen it all in this game, you see something new,” Dodgers pitcher Chris Capuano said.
It was a very unpleasant day for the boys in blue at Chavez Ravine on Sunday afternoon. The Dodgers were having some major technical difficulties trying to find their swing. The Reds pitching staff struck out 20 Dodgers during the game.
“You’re kind of inning to inning trying to win a game. You’re not really paying attention to how they’re getting their outs, just that they’re getting them,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. “It’s a good game for us from the standpoint of it’s a close game, it’s a tough game, it’s a tough club. It’s a game we hung in there and stole a series.”
The Dodgers were able to come away from the game with a victory, thanks to their hotshot rookie Puig.
Puig has been a huge factor for the Dodgers since joining the team from the minors two months ago. He’s producing and adding to his statistics day by day in the big leagues. The Cuban hit his 10th home run of the year and has a .372 batting average.
The Dodgers continue to show improvement everyday. Although thy couldn’t buy a hit on Sunday, the team’s defense and pitching stepped up to the plate. The Dodgers are playing with a lot of confidence and a dangerous contender. We haven’t seen the Dodgers play this good in over four years. With their hot streak going, the Dodgers have surely gained a lot of respect from opponents across the league.
The only concern is that the Dodgers have over 50 left games left in the season. That is a lot of baseball to be played. Can the Dodgers keep that rhythm going? Right now they are in first place in the National League West. If they can continue to stay hot-the postseason will be a sure thing.
Dodgers closer Brandon League has made a comeback. He’s feeding off his teammates’ positive vibes. When a team is winning and having fun, it can get get contagious and filter down into the entire clubhouse. League is on a winning streak. In his last four games, League is 3-0 and has pitched 6 and 2/3 scoreless innings.
When you ask players about individual performances, their inclination is to speak more along the lines of teamwork. Infielder Hanley Ramirez, who has been on a hot streak of his own, said the Dodgers are not 9-1 since the all-streak because of him. It’s been a team effort, he said.
“It’s just not me and my performance,” Ramirez said. “I’m not going to talk about my individual performance. We are winning as a team and everyone is contributing.”
