Dodgers’ outfielder Skip Schumaker compares this Dodgers team to the 2006 and 2011 St. Louis Cardinals World Championship teams he played on. He talks about the similarities and if the Dodgers have what it takes to make a run. The Dodgers have the talent and chemistry to win, but it’s all about who’s hot at the right time.
News4usonline.com: What do you see in this clubhouse that you saw during the 20011 series run?
SS: Well I think the talent is there and the chemistry- that combination is huge. You just can’t run on talent…you have to have the chemistry, the role players, the superstars, all click on the same page and pulling from the same rope. It’s a tough team to beat and they’re a really good formula to have. I see a lot of similarities in that.
News4usonline.com: I know you’ve won a World Series, so what do you think this team needs to do better in order to make it to the top?
SS: Well, we’ve got to get to the playoffs first. It’s not always the best team that win the World Series; it’s the hottest team at the right time- so hopefully we can get hot as we get into the playoffs. Anything can happen once we get in. But we can be better defensively and scoring position, there’s always things we could be better at, this game is really difficult. You can never be satisfied, no matter what kind of run you’re on.
News4usonline.com: Have the guys ever asked you about what the journey was like when you won a World Series back in 2006 and 2011?
SS: Yeah, when I was in spring training it was a big deal. Guys were asking what is it like and the experience. The playoffs is a whole different animal, if you haven’t experienced it before. It’s not like a regular season game. It’s not even close to a rivalry game, a weekend game or whatever it is. To be playoff tested is big. We are fortunate to have a lot of guys with rings on this team, so guys can ask questions. But until you’ve been there you just don’t know.
News4usonline.com: How does it feel to know that you’ll have a chance to win a World Series again? I mean this is a good team.
SS: Every team has a chance once you get in the playoffs. No one picked the Cardinals to win in 2011. I won another one in 2006, and they didn’t pick us either. So I think anybody in the playoffs has a chance. I was lucky to get traded over here and we have a better chance than anybody, but I don’t want to say we’re going to win it just yet.
How does it feel to have a chance to win another World Series in your hometown?
SS: It would be special. This is a team I grew up watching when I was younger. The only games I went to were Dodgers games, so this will be an unbelievable experience to win it especially at Dodger Stadium. But like I said, it’s a long time away, so I can’t really say.
