LOS ANGELES-There’s always the show within the show. And within that show has to be a conductor oeprating behind the scenes to make sure the production run as smooth as possible. Kathy Connell is in that type of role. Connell is responsible for making the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards go on without a hitch on Jan. 25 (TNT, TBS). As actors Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) and Ansel Elgort (Divergent) read out the nominees list early Wednesday morning, Connell was, of course, making the rounds to ensure there were no hiccups along the way.

The SAG film awards nominations called out the best in “Birdman,” which was tapped for four possible awards. Acting icon Cicely Tyson received her fifth Screen Actor Guild nomination for her role in “The Trip to Bountiful.” Then there is the hot new show, “Orange is the New Black,” up for two awards.  Of course, this is old hat for Connell, who has been producing the show since it first came into fruition. But as News4usonline.com caught up with Connell after the nominations were announced, the longtime show producer sounded pretty ecstatic about this year’s production.

“I am excited not only for the wonderful films, but I think it’s been an amazing TV year, and I’m very excited at our TV nominations,” Connell  said. “I think we have some new folks that have never been in the mix before. We have some people who are returning but they have great shows. We are very pleased with our nominations.”

Connell spoke on the growth of the industry from the time she started to the present.

“This is the 21st year for the Sag Awards,” Connell said. “When we started there were basically three networks. And then there were four, and now there are hundreds of channels as well as Internet providers..Amazon, Netflix. I think it’s a challenge for everyone to see what is avaialble…I’m excited about our nominations.”

Connell emphazied that though she is the executive producer of the show, it is the effort of colloboration between she and her staff that makes the Sag Awards go to showtime without blemish.

“I am the excecutive producer, but I a very fortunate woman because I have the best team in Hollywood around me,” Connell said. “We’ve been doing this for a long time, we have a family going on here. So I’m very proud of our team.”

One of the more fundamental dynamics of network television these days have been new shows that have garnered a lot of attention for their quality presentation. Shows like the “Orange is the New Black (Outstanding Performance by an Ensemblein a Comedy Series),” Netflix’s “House of Cards (Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, Kevin Spacey-Male, Drama),” ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder,” starring SAG nominee Viola Davis (Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series), and Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” starring Andre Braughgher (nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series), has benefited from the kind of quality writing that makes great acting go to another level.

That’s an aspect that’s highlighted in the nominations. Connell spoke to that point.

“It takes a team,” Connell said. “Every show is not just the actor…that’s what we salute because that’s who we are-SAG-AFTRA, (but) you have incredible writing, you have incredible directing and producers. It takes a team to make good films and good television. We think we’re saluting some of the best performances in some some of the best shows and film. ”
