On a doubleheader night of View Park basketball, the boys took the victory over visiting Santa Clarita Christian School 63-48. The Saint Mary’s Gym was already buzzing from the first game that saw The Lady Knights destroy Polytechnic (Pasadena) 69-37.

After winning the opening tip the View Park Knights tossed a lob to Chance Comanche for the dunk, the tone was set right away.

View Park opened the game on 9-0 run to jump to the early lead with 5:22 on the clock and never looked back. Santa Clarita did settle down and finished the first quarter on small 6-0 run that left the score 14-9 to start the second quarter.  Dual-sport athlete Luis Mederis for the Knights add a much need spark from the bench with 10 points and aggressive defense.

Coach Ken Henderson started playing a full court press to slow down SCCS and allow for his athletes to use their length and speed to their advantage.

Henderson said the keys tonight, “Attack their Bigs and keeping them (the guards) on their toes.” Having a 6-foot-11 Comanche on hand makes things little bit easy to follow the game plan to tune of 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Knights.

Santa Clarita only trailed by five points at the half but all the air left the gym for them when they allowed View Park to jump out on a 7-0 run to start the second half. So any gleam or hope they had left at that point.

The lead soon jumped to 10 points at 31-21 6:46 in third quarter. Then that lead stretched to 16 points to start the fourth quarter 47-31. The Knights slowed the game down and went away from the plan. This lead to some sloppy play in end but it wasn’t enough to stop the Knights from advancing in the Division V State playoffs.

The Knights will need to travel to San Gabriel Academy on Tuesday, March 18 in order to reach the regional finals March 22 at Colony High School in Ontario, CA.
