LOS ANGELES (September 14, 2019) – Howard University women’s volleyball team ended the weekend with a three-set loss (17-25, 22-25, 20-25) to Yale (YU) at the Trojan Invitational, hosted by Southern California.
HU (2-9) went toe-to-toe with three of their toughest competition on the young season; however, unable to break through for a victory. Howard compiled 33 unforced errors (24 hitting and nine serving), compared to the Bulldogs’ 24 unforced errors (14 hitting and nine serving).
In set one, HU grabbed the upper hand midway through after junior Jurnee Tipton (Ypsilanti, Mich.) delivered a service ace, 13-12, but back-to-back hitting errors jump started Yale’s 13-4 run that end the game.
Set two saw the Bison trailing as much as eight on multiple occasions, but Howard refused to go away. HU clawed their way back into the game and took the lead late, 20-18, but several hitting errors put the Bulldogs back in control to win the set.
Yale held a 15-13 advantage in the third set, but three consecutive unforced errors gave Howard the lead midway, 16-15. YU reclaimed the lead and won the contest, scoring their final eight out of 10 points on hitting errors.
Tipton led the way with a team-leading 10 kills, along with seven digs. Freshmen setters Kayla Diaz (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Semira Blair (Fort Worth, Texas) combined for 26 assists while junior Fola Wilson (Minneapolis, Minn.) recorded a team-best 12 digs in the loss.
For Yale (1-5), they picked up their first win of the season. Izzy Simqi led the Bulldogs, posting 10 kills (team-high). Kathryn Attar filled the stat sheet, finishing with nine kills, four service aces, four digs and a pair of blocks in the victory.
Next weekend (Sept. 20-22), HU returns to The District for a trio of matches.
Friday (Sept. 20), Howard faces SEC foe Ole Miss inside The Burr. First-serve is set for 6 p.m. The next day (Sept. 21), the Bison host Big Ten opponent Rutgers at The Hilltop. Match time is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 22), HU wraps up the weekend at crosstown rival Georgetown. The action starts 1 p.m.
