The USC football team picked up their second win in a row, and their first road win this past weekend against Colorado Buffaloes, recording a 35-31 come-from-behind victory. Despite losing some tough games this season, the Trojans are tied with No. 9 Utah at the top of the Pac-12 Conference South Division.
USC head coach Clay Helton sees the win against Colorado as another stepping stone in the pathway for the Trojans to play in the Pac-12 Conference title game, and possibly beyond.
“This is our opportunity at a championship, we needed this game to be able to control our own destiny,” Helton said. “College football is hard, [the] Pac-12 hard. This is something that builds teams and builds families, it makes you stronger. To be able to overcome those situations. These guys have the confidence now to get the job done.” No matter what people are saying, USC is still controlling their destiny and they are capable of having a great season. The team’s goal of winning a Pac-12 championship is still reachable.”
The rest of the games this season matters and the Trojans must continue to focus on getting better. Every day and every game Helton preaches the mentality to fight on, stay resilient, and amazing things will happen.
“I tell my guys all we got to do is keep fighting, take a deep breath, stay poised and you will walk away winners,” Helton said.”
The Trojans walked away as winners and they look to get another big win this upcoming week against Oregon.
The Trojans are feeling extremely confident about the direction they are headed in. Emerging young freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis is showcasing his leadership and skills every game to lead the pack. Slovis produced a monster game against Colorado, completing 68 percent of his passes to the tune of 406 yards and four touchdowns against the Buffaloes.
His two touchdown passes to wide receiver Michael Pittman in the fourth quarter spurred the comeback victory for USC. With USC down 31-21, Slovis connected with Pittman on touchdown throws of 44 and 37 yards in the final period to lead the Trojans to their fifth (5-3 overall, 4-1 Pac-12 Conference) win of the season.
After the game, Pittman spoke highly of Slovis.
“For him being so young and making big plays is huge. I think Kedon is a great player and he has a bright future,” Pittman said.
Helton also spoke well of his quarterback.
“I’m not trying to blow his head up but in the brightest moments when it’s time to show immense poise in a situation, he’s proven he handle it,” Helton.
With the number of players that are continuously getting injured, and the way other players are stepping up shows leadership from not only the players but the coaches as well. This is a great season that the Trojans are going to be able to look back to remember, regardless of the outcome of the season.
When one man goes down, another step in. Perseverance is key for this team, and the Trojans are continuing to prove that every game. If you were to foresee this many players getting injured before this season started, no one would believe USC would be one of the top teams in the conference with an opportunity to win the Pac-12.
