Christian Brothers edges out Central State

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Central State Marauders lost their season-opener, 78-56, to Christian Brothers University on Friday night. The Marauders converted just 33.9% from the field compared to CBU’s 48.3% shooting performance.

“It was a tough game for us going up against one of the top teams in the Gulf South Conference,” said Central State coach Joseph Price. “These are the type of teams our guys have to be ready to go up against. This is a good lesson for us. We have to pay more attention to detail. It doesn’t feel good to lose so hopefully we can regroup and play a better game at their place this Sunday.”

CBU seized control of the game midway through the first half. Up 16-10 at the 12:32 mark, the CBU Buccaneers outscored the Marauders, 24-16, over a span of nine minutes to distance themselves,40-16, and took a 44-25 lead into intermission.

CSU cut the deficit down, 58-43, after an Orion Monford jumper at the 12:09 mark of the second half but that would be as close as the score would get. CBU’s Luke Rudy scored eight of his team’s next 11 points as the Bucs extended their lead to 69-45 with 6:20 left to play and went on to the 22-point victory.

CBU forward Jacob Lyons led all scorers with 18 points while converting nine of 11 shot attempts. Adam Dieball filled the stat sheets with 15 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, and four blocks.

As a team, CBU recorded 21 assists to the Marauders’ 10. The Buccaneers also used the three-pointer to their advantage with an 11 for 32 performance from beyond the arc compared to CSU’s six three-pointers out of 22 attempts.

Making his first start of his collegiate career, CSU guard Orion Monford was a bright spot for the Marauders with 15 points and six rebounds. Freshman Dorian Crutcher finished with 14 points and Dwight Richards, Jr. recorded 12 points.

“We struggled from the field and missed a lot of layups,” Price said. “I think we can be a much better defensive team. We need to keep our heads on a swivel and play with more intensity. We did a decent job with offensive rebounding but we did not do a great job of capitalizing on those second chance opportunities.”
