Banana pudding, hot links and other munchy items go hand-in-hand with the best summer basketball league in the country.
Yeah, it’s that time of year again. The Drew League, sponsored Nike Basketball, is all about the showcase of current and former NBA players meeting up to do their thing on the court against street legends and pickup basketball all-stars. Of course, the best part of all this is that it’s free to watch.
The time for pickup basketball has begun to hit the recreation nerve of hoop junkies here. The lines are starting to get long again as they do annually whenever the Drew League hits its season stride. The geographic location of where the Drew League is played has no bearing on who shows up or not.
Basketball aficionados know what time it is. When you consider the going rate of NBA ticket prices these days, getting a chance to watch these mercurial athletes at the right price of nothing is more than a bargain. It’s a steal.
It’s early into the Drew League season, but the drama of “Who Got Next?” is starting to pick up with steam. Week 5 of Drew League action saw BB4L strut their stuff against LAUNFD in the marquee matchup of the seven-game card on Sunday, July 3.
It was a pretty interesting contest as BB4L, coached by former NBA star and Drew League hoopster Baron Davis, simply could not be stopped by Cuttino Mobley and his LAUNFD squad. It turned out to be too much burn on the other end for Mobley and his team.
LAUNFD fell to 3-2 in the John Williams Division after BB4L’s 88-68 win in front of a packed gymnasium at King Drew Medical Magnet High. It looked rather easy for the still undefeated BB4L team (5-0). If Terrence Ross wasn’t dropping in 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 25 points, guard Casper Ware was cleaning up the mess with his 22 points.
It was an emphatic statement made by BB4L against LAUNFD, the reigning Drew League champions. BB4L took the game to LAUNFD, coming out aggressively with a torrid of 3-pointers and pushing the ball up the court with no mercy. The style that BB4L played with was similar in the way Davis played when he was ballin’ during his NBA heyday.
That couldn’t be said about Mobley and LAUNFD. In this game, there was just no rhyme or reason on how the 2015 Drew League champs played. Maybe, it was just one of those games. Mobley, who at one time starred in the NBA for the Los Angeles Clippers, couldn’t really get it going offensively against his former teammate’s team.
