It was a tough day at the office for Howard University last Saturday. The Bison ran up against a superior team in the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and came away with its second defeat of the season. Nonetheless, Howard (o-2) had a few bright spots during the 52-14 road loss.
Two numbers stand out the most during the nonconference matchup; Rutgers had a 375-150 margin in the rushing department over Howard. In getting first downs, Rutgers also came out on top, surmounting a 26-12 advantage. Interestingly enough, Howard scored all of its points in the first quarter, leading Rutgers 14-7 going into the second period.
The 14-0 lead that Howard was able to achieve didn’t last too long. With the score knotted 14-14 at the half, the Scarlet Knights came up with 21 points in the third quarter to take command of the game. Rutgers finished the contest with a 17-0 run in the fourth quarter to closeout the win.
Anthony Philyaw mustered up a solid performance for Howard, going 112 yards on 22 carries. Philyaw’s counterpart for Rutgers, Janarion Gran, had a real good day, rushing for 106 yards on just six carries.
