Black voters prefer Biden over Trump

Before the first debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, Black voters dropped some clues about how they viewed the two presidential candidates.

Ahead of the debate that turned disastrous for Biden, the majority of Black voters surveyed by the Pew Research Center, said they would cast their ballot for the presidential incumbent in November’s election.

According to a couple of reports from the Pew Research Center, Black voters are not too thrilled about either presidential candidate. In April and May, Black voters were heavily leaning toward supporting Biden.

For all intention and purpose, the debate turned out to be a visual dumpster fire for Biden. Trump was also close to going off the rails as well. Black voters appear to know who they will vote for. Twenty-six percent of Black voters surveyed by the Pew Research Center trust Trump to act ethically in office.

But when it comes to being viewed as physically fit to handle the job as president, Biden tanked with Black voters with 65 percent saying he is capable of handling the job, according to an April 2024 report by the Pew Research Center. That’s not a good sign for the incumbent commander-in-chief.

One of the key issues from this report which surveyed 8,709 adults, is how the election reflects racial demographics. Whites prefer Trump (56 percent) over Biden (42 percent) by a wide margin. As the poll suggests, black voters are riding with Biden (77 percent to 18 percent for Trump).

The consensus among Black voters is that President Joe Biden is the better choice than Donald Trump as commander-in-chief, according to the latest poll conducted by the Pew Research Center. Using 5,140 adults, the survey shows Biden has a significant leap between himself and Trump.

That’s because Black Americans tend to vote or lean more toward the Democratic Party. In an early preview of the 2024 Presidential Election in November, the Pew Research Center’s survey has 83 percent of Black voters being more Democratic than Republican.

Black women have led the way in that regard. While 81 percent of Black men vote Democratic, Black women are strong in showing their affiliation with the Democratic Party with 84 percent stating that this is their political party of choice.

The Republican Party, however, is making ground with Black voters. In 2012, at the beginning of the second term of President Barack Obama, the first and only Black American to be president, Black people with college degrees were all in on the Democratic ticket.

According to the May 20, 2024 Pew Research Center report, 93 percent of Black voters with degrees were in favor of the Democratic Party.

Those times have changed. In 2023, only 79 percent of Black voters with college degrees said they lean toward the Democratic Party. The Republican Party has also made inroads with young Black voters with 17 percent of those between the ages of 18 and 49 saying that this is the political party they roll with.

Only 7 % of Black voters 50 and over identify with the Republican Party.

In that same vein, 77 percent of those voters say that they will vote for Biden. Trump, who served as president of the United States from 2016 to the time Biden ousted him, is set to receive only 18 percent of the Black vote.

In contrast to a few headlines with Black celebrities showing their support for Trump, most Black people have a less than favorable view of Trump, the report says. According to the Pew Research Center study, 72 percent of Black voters say Trump was a poor or terrible president. And a strong majority of Black voters (65 percent) believe Trump broke the law when he tried to interfere in the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.
