Dave Kox and Friends ring in the holiday spirit

CERRITOS, Calif. – It is officially the most wonderful time of the year! The holiday season is a time for unity, gift giving, and quality time spent with those we cherish dearly in our lives and with that comes various shows of entertainment in celebration.

I have come here to share my own personal experience of being able to witness Dave Koz’s take on Christmas and holiday celebration with the 27th Annual Dave Koz and Friends Christmas tour.

This concert served as more than just singers singing and musicians playing their instruments but as a fun hangout and a bit of a comedy show. The effort in creativity for this show was well done throughout as it provided the audience with a cozy and comfy time gathered around our imaginary fireplace.

What stuck with me was the space given for each artist to shine and spread their holiday cheer through their individual covers showcasing exactly why it is called Dave Koz and Friends.

The friends included Grammy-nominated Jonathan Butler, vocalist Rebecca Jade, guitarist Adam Hawley, and saxophonist Vincent Ingala who brought their own individual flare to the Christmas classics we all know and love.

At one point during the show, which took place at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, Ingala had started his cover of Elvis Presley’s “Blue Christmas” with an outstanding impression and finished off with an extremely impressive committed costume which I commend him for.

What made this concert memorable was being able to see and feel the artists enjoying themselves on stage from the front-liners and the wonderful musicians on stage who played the whole show.

This explains why so many people have come back for this tour, which has been going on for almost three decades. Concerts are for entertainment, but more importantly, they are placed in front of us for recreation and amusement for the attendees.

Can this be the reason that audiences leave the show feeling this way if we can tell the performers are really into it for their own pleasure? Perhaps. If anything, this can be described more as a giant party rather than a concert because that’s exactly what this was.

We cheered with the up-tempo songs and silently swayed and took in the serenity of ballads of Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” and many other tunes.

One thing I deeply appreciated was the tenderness and humility shared between songs as Koz himself shared his Jewish heritage and what celebrating the holiday season looked like with him and Butler spreading the Gospel through song, reminding all of us about the real reason for the season.

Blood, sweat, and tears went into this beautiful Christmas celebration, which serves as a joyous time for folks of all ages. This is what the holiday season is all about.
