LOS ANGELES- It’s football season on a rare Thursday night under the lights. Historical powerhouse Dorsey Dons wore down the visiting Hamilton Yankees in a 50-13 victory. The game was a lot closer in the first half when the score was 17-13, and the Yankees had more energy. Veteran Dorsey head coach Paul Knox had the right words for his team at the halftime to allow for both sides of ball to step up.
On the opening kickoff, running back Anthony McGinnis had a 68-yard return to give Dorsey great field position and a boost of energy. The first few series allowed both teams to get their jitters out being the first game of the high school football season. Hamilton’s defense only allowed one touchdown and made Dorsey settle for a field goal on their next scoring possession to make it 10-0.
Dorsey seemed to have a game plan to put pressure on Hamilton’s quarterback Armani Rogers, who lead his team down field with a few completions before a 2-yard touchdown made it a 10-7 ballgame.
The first turnover of the game was by a Dorsey wideout after a catch and fumble, which was scooped up by big time two-way player Jericho Flowers. The Yankees’ offense could not find a way to capitalize due to the pressure from the edges that kept collapsing the pocket. This caused them to insert wildcat style quarterback Russell Shaw to slow down Dorsey’s rush by design quarterback draws.
Shaw’s quick feet lead to Hamilton’s last score of the game on 2-yard run with only seven seconds left in the half to make it 17-13.
Dorsey’s defensive backs played well in coverage and adding additional pressure with few different blitz packages to contain the elusive Rogers. The Dons defensive backs Cory Riley, Darlington, Clinton Hewitt, and ABRE LoVo combined for over six sacks in game.
The Dons defense shut out the Yankees in second half of game while the offense finally started to click. This game was all about team and wining by committee on both sides of the ball.
In the second half, three different running backs scored rushing touchdowns lead by work horse Ramon Lewis, who almost walked in on 13-yard score. The rushing game allowed Rodney Evans to have open throwing lanes as he dropped TD passes of 25, 18, and 9 yards.
