Durant’s pick-six altered the Bucs game

(News 4Us Online) – Fittingly, on a night in which future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald was given his flowers and celebrated by the team he spent his entire career with, a defensive player came up with the play of the game.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers ran off 12 more plays than the Los Angeles Rams during their Sunday Night Football encounter at SoFi Stadium. There was one play, however, in particular that the Buccaneers and quarterback Baker Mayfield probably wished that they could have back.

That play came early in the game just as people were still getting settled into their seats. The matchup between the Rams and Buccaneers was expected to be a tussle between the two NFC titans. It wound up being a lopsided 34-7 win for the Rams and a harsh reality check for Tampa Bay.

By halftime, this game was, for all intents and purposes, over. After two quarters of play, the Rams had already staked out a 31-7 lead. Quarterback Matthew Stafford had already thrown for three touchdown passes and made history.

The Rams defense was busy making life in the pocket miserable for Mayfield. Up until intermission, Mayfield had completed 9 of the 19 passes he attempted and was sacked twice. One of those failed passing attempts by Mayfield turned out to be a momentum-shifting play in the Rams’ favor.

The Rams were already up 7-0 in the first quarter when Mayfield tried to connect with his tight end Cade Otton on a short throw to the outside. Well, the problem with Mayfield’s thinking was that the side of the field was being manned by Rams ballhawk cornerback Cobie Durant

The football reached Otton well enough, but the tight end seemed to bobble the ball up in the air before trying to regain control of the object. It was too late.

Closing in to make a quick tackle on Otton, Durant, instead, seized on the tight end’s errant juggling act and snatched the ball away from him and raced down the sidelines to the end zone to complete a 50-yard interception return for a score.

“If I want it, I’m going to get it,” Durant said shortly after the game. “I seen him bobbling it, and then immediately, in my mind, I’m like: ‘I’m finna take this ball.’”

Just like that, the Rams were up 14-0. In a blink, Durant’s pick six appeared to flip the tone of the game altogether. Rams head coach Sean McVay said Durant’s interception return gave LA an unquestioned advantage.

“I thought it was huge and what I think was really cool about that, is we get the stop right away,” McVay said during his weekday Zoom press conference. “They take the ball, we get the stop, and then the offense goes down and Matthew orchestrates a great touchdown drive culminating in Davante’s touchdown. Then you end up looking at it and you say, ‘Alright, the crowd’s fired up.’ I thought it was an amazing atmosphere and environment, really cool. I think the players fed off of that and then that really elevated it. It made it difficult for Tampa.”

Durant’s takeaway and subsequent score tilted the game towards the Rams.

“You open up the scoring right there and then you could just feel that…that momentum was in our favor,” remarked McVay. “We started fast, but I thought that really opened the game up, if you will. I don’t think we ever really looked back as a team from that play.”

This is Durant’s fourth season playing in the NFL. The Rams drafted Durant out of South Carolina State with a fourth round selection. Durant’s development has steadily improved.

In the four years that he has been with the Rams, Durant’s stock value has risen while his play has improved. His three interceptions through 11 games already equals his career-high in a season. McVay has been impressed by Durant’s growth.

“He’s been great,” McVay said. “Similar to what you talk about with Emmanuel Forbes. When you have guys that consistently understand the importance of work and how that earns you the right to play with a quieted mind, to be able to play with confidence, and then you start seeing a lot of the ways that you practice in the way that you perform and you prepare and practice then start to become game reality, you’re earning that confidence on a weekly and a daily basis.”
