(News4usonline) — Sometimes, in order to truly understand struggle, we must step into the shoes of those who have endured discrimination because of the color of their skin.
During Black History Month, we reflect on the many accomplished Black musicians whose talents shaped generations, while also acknowledging the injustice and barriers they faced. Despite their extraordinary gifts, their brilliance was often not enough to shield them from racism or guarantee them equal treatment as human beings.
Dating back to the early 1900s, during the Jim Crow era, segregation was deeply rooted in the South. The separation between white and Black Americans was enforced through “Whites Only” and “Blacks Only” signs, created to maintain racial division.

The film Green Book not only opens viewers’ eyes to the hostility faced by Black individuals attempting to sit and dine with white patrons but also highlights the harsh reality of limited choices Black Americans endured while navigating a deeply segregated society.
The film reveals the emotional and social effects of discrimination, showing what happens when a person is denied dignity, respect, and basic freedom simply because of their race.
This emotionally compelling film offers a glimpse into the life of Donald Shirley, an American classical pianist and composer portrayed by Mahershala Ali. The story follows Shirley as he embarks on a concert tour through the Deep South in 1962.
In search of protection and assistance, he hires Tony “Lip” Vallelonga, played by Viggo Mortensen, an Italian American bouncer who initially holds prejudiced views toward Black people.
Throughout their journey, Tony begins to experience a change of heart. As he escorts Dr. Shirley through the South, he witnesses firsthand the discrimination Shirley endures — from being restricted to eating at Black establishments to changing clothes in storage spaces and navigating sundown towns, where Black individuals were expected to be off the streets by nightfall.
The film powerfully showcases the privilege associated with being white during this era and the constant caution Black Americans were forced to exercise to avoid severe consequences. As their bond develops, Tony becomes increasingly protective of Dr. Shirley, ensuring his safety and standing by his side throughout the tour.
Dr. Shirley’s brilliant mind also influences Tony on a personal level. He helps Tony write more thoughtful letters to his wife, Dolores Vallelonga, portrayed by Linda Cardellini, who remains at home caring for their children during the eight-week journey.

Through these moments, the film highlights personal growth, friendship, and cultural understanding.
The brilliance of Dr. Shirley’s piano performances amazes audiences and leaves Tony questioning how someone capable of producing such beautiful music could be so unwelcome in the very places where he performs.
While crowds admire his talent and gather to hear him play, he is still denied the simple dignity of sitting at the same table as those who celebrate his artistry.
At the end of the film, Tony rushes back to the Bronx just in time to celebrate Christmas with his loved ones. Too tired to continue driving, Dr. Shirley takes over the journey, allowing Tony to enjoy Christmas dinner with his family.
Though initially unsure of whether he will be accepted, Dr. Shirley later visits Tony’s home, where he is welcomed with open arms at the dinner table — a powerful moment symbolizing growth, acceptance, and genuine friendship.
Green Book ultimately shows that the bond between two people can transcend societal norms and personal differences. As February comes to an end, the film reminds viewers that empathy and understanding can help bridge divisions, and that recognizing the struggles of others is a step toward meaningful change.
