Harrison Mevis Makes His Kicks Count

Los Angeles, CA (News4usonline) – The Los Angeles Rams had question marks in the kicking game last season. Whatever those questions were, Harrison Mevis answered them. Mevis took over placekicking duties for the Rams midway into the 2025 NFL season and hasn’t looked back.

Neither has the Rams. The Rams made it all the way to the NFC Championship game last season. Mevis was a big part of the Rams advancing that far. The Rams hit the road for all three playoff games they played in. They won two.

The strong right leg of Mevis was the deciding factor in those victories. He booted two field goals in the Rams’ Wild Card win against the Carolina Panthers. He then outdid himself by kicking the game-winner in overtime at Solder Field against the Bears.

“That was my first game-winner in the NFL,” Mevis said after a team’s training camp practice at Loyola Marymount University earlier this summer. “That’s a moment that I’ve been working towards. It all goes back to the training that I’ve done, the trust I have in myself to go and make kicks and help this team win at the end of the day. So, it’s what we do it for. I had a lot of fun…just cherish that moment.”

That moment entailed Mevis kicking his 42-yarder through the goalposts in frigid weather conditions with the backdrop of a raucous fan base at one of the most storied football stadiums in the NFL. That moment didn’t prove to be too big for Mevis.

“There, it’s windy, cold. You have all the elements. You have the fans,” Mevis remarked. “It’s all just dialing it all in, locking it in, being in my own world. Go make your kick.”

Mevis made two kicks in the Rams’ 34-31 Wild Card win against the Panthers. The big deal about that was as an undrafted free agent, Mevis tried to latch on with Carolina. The Panthers released Mevis.

Mevis faced off against his former team during the regular season, kicking and making four extra point attempts for the Rams in a 31-28 Week 13 loss to the Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. Mevis and the Rams were forced to return to Carolina for a Wild Card matchup.

Mevis made good on both of the field goals he attempted in the Rams’ 34-31 win. While it makes for a good storyline, Mevis said he had no extra motivation to help beat his former team.

“It’s just another game. I’m just here to help this team [Rams] win at the end of the day,” Mevis said.  “Obviously, I’ve kicked in that stadium. So, I kind of used that to my advantage. I know I’ve kicked there before. There was a certain confidence there.”

At the end of the day, a kick is a kick, whether you’re lining up to boot the ball through the uprights in the preseason or kicking in the regular season or the postseason. It’s all the same, Mevis said.

“It’s more so trying to keep everything the same no matter where you’re at, no matter the circumstances,” Mevis said. “I always go back to just me and the ball, whether it’s SoFi [Stadium] , whether it’s MetLife [Stadium], Carolina. It’s all the same.”

Before Mevis entered the picture, the Rams were scrambling to get their kicking game in order. There were blocked kicks. Frustration mounted over missed field goals. Rams head coach Sean McVay needed to make a change. He did.

Since going with Mevis as the team’s placekicker, the Rams have found stabilization at the position. Mevis is their guy. Before going on his remarkable postseason run in which he made all of his kicks, Mevis made 12 of the 13 field goals he attempted in the regular season.

Postseason success was a natural transition for the former University of Missouri standout. Mevis now wants to build on what he was able to accomplish last season.

“It goes back to me doing my job,” Mevis said after a practice at this year’s training camp. “They [Rams] expect me to go out there and make kicks, do everything I can, trust in the process of what I do, knowing all the training and the work I’ve put in for these moments, for this opportunity just to go out here…it always goes back to the training that you’ve done, and the process you have. My process works, so I’m just going to keep it rolling.”

Mevis and the Rams have moved on from training camp. Mevis made his two field goal attempts in the Rams’ 20-12 win against the Kansas City Chiefs in the team’s first preseason game. With the 2026 NFL regular season on the horizon, don’t expect Mevis to change one step in his gametime preparation.

“It all goes back to internal, where it’s mental, just processing, getting in the right mindset,” said Mevis. “It’s all just focusing on the little things that I got to do for that day. Whether that’s just focusing on my warmup, focusing on where I am. Making sure I got to be where I got to be. I don’t do anything too special. It’s all very basic. Just warm up and make sure I’m ready to go.”
