Hugo Lloris has signed with LAFC with a one-year deal through the 2024 season. Lloris’ contract also includes two option years for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Lloris, 37, joins LAFC after a 19-year career in Europe in the top leagues.
Lloris is the third veteran European player LAFC has signed. Lloris is making history as he becomes the first-ever French goalkeeper to play in the MLS.

Lloris started his playing career with Nice in 2005. He played for two Ligue 1 teams: Nice and Lyon. He also played in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur.
With Tottenham, Lloris made 447 appearances and has not played a game since April 2023 of last season. Newcastle United was the last team Lloris played during the 6-1 loss with a thigh injury at half-time.
In the summer transfer 2023, Lazio and Nice were interested in getting Lloris, but no transfer occurred and he was replaced as captain by Son Heung-min.
Lloris was also teammates with former Welsh player Gareth Bale at Tottenham after he announced his retirement in the 2023 season.
They could have made a reunion after being in the same team with Totemham from 2008 to 2013 and in the 2020-21 season when Bale was on loan.
Lloris appeared in two FIFA World Cup finals back-to-back in 2018 and 2022. He ended up winning the World Cup in 2018.
Lloris has the record for the most appearances of 145 matches for the France National football team. He also holds the record for the most appearances by a goalkeeper in FIFA World Cup history with 20 appearances.
Lloris was with the France national team from 2008 to 2022. His last game with France was the World Cup Finals in 2022. Lloris is a high-profile star player from Europe who is following in the footsteps of Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini.
In the past two seasons, LAFC has had high-value signings from Europe that’s mostly older European stars like Bale, Chellini, and now Lloris.
Bale ended up retiring before the 2023 season even though he joined the team in June 2022. Chiellini announced his retirement a few weeks ago.
As Lloris joins LAFC, Abraham Romero has one more year on his contract. Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau and John McCarthy were in the rotation for the starting 11 are both free agents.

Lloris and Romero are the only keepers remaining with Black & Gold.
In a press release about Lloris, LAFC manager John Thorrington said, “Hugo is arguably the most successful goalkeeper of his generation and a proven winner. We are incredibly excited that Hugo has chosen LAFC for the next phase of his illustrious career.”
Lloris is Tottenham’s most accomplished player. He helped Spurs reach the 2019 UEFA Champions League final and he is no longer in the starting 11 in the 2023-24 season since the new manager Ange Postecoglou took over this season.
Lloris will feature in his first game in the 2024 opener against Seattle Sounders FC at BMO Stadium on Feb. 24.
