The top prep football team in the state and the No. 1-rated high school in the country, Mater Dei kept its unbeaten streak alive with a convincing 51-14 win against visiting Orange Lutheran Friday night. By halftime, this contest was in the books for Mater Dei, which faces off against Trinity League rival Servite in its next game.
Mater Dei, paced by quarterback Bryce Young’s three first half touchdown passes, scored 21 points in the first quarter and added another 14 in the second period to post a 35-7 lead at intermission. Young, who finished the game completing 25 of 36 passes for 278 yards and four touchdowns, threw for two touchdowns in the opening quarter as Mater Dei zipped to a 21-0 lead.
On his four touchdown passes thrown, Young connected with Kyron Ware-Hudson (3 yards), Kody Epps (3 yards), CJ Williams (15 yards), and Josiah Zamora (8 yards). Mater Dei wins thus far this season includes beating national powerhouses such as Corona Centennial (42-12) and St. Frances Academy (Baltimore, MD) 34-18.
