It turns out that winning Super Bowl LIV may not have been the crown jewel in Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ young career. Hammering out a very lucrative 10-year extension deal with his ballclub months after securing the Super Bowl MVP and leading the Chiefs to a 31-20 win against the San Francisco 49ers, will afford Mahomes the opportunity to pass out many jewels if he chooses to. The agreement that Mahomes is reportedly locked into is supposed to be worth $503 million, the biggest sports contract ever.
“This is a significant moment for our franchise and for the Chiefs Kingdom,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said. “Since he joined the Chiefs just a few years ago, Patrick has developed into one of the most prolific athletes in all of sports. With his dynamic play and infectious personality, he is one of the most recognized and beloved figures to put on the Chiefs uniform. He’s an extraordinary leader and a credit to the Kansas City community, and I’m delighted that he will be a member of the Chiefs for many years to come.”

Does Mahomes, the 24-year-old hotshot signal-caller, deserve this kind of money? If you ever catch highlight reels of Mahomes making a mockery of NFL defenses seemingly week after week, you would probably say yes. If you saw Mahomes lead the Chiefs to comeback wins in all three of the postseason games they played in ( Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans, San Francisco 49ers), you would probably whole-heartedly agree that Mahomes is due the big bucks.
Obviously, head coach Andy Reid and the Chiefs thought Mahomes was simply marvelous during the team’s postseason run. Actually, Reid believes Mahomes, whom the team picked in the first round (No. 10) of the 2017 NFL Draft, is a once-in-a-generation player.
“I’ve had the privilege of coaching a lot of incredible athletes and special people in my career, and Patrick is without question on that list of players.” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “The best part is he’s still early in his career. He’s a natural leader and always grinding, whether that’s on the field, in the weight room or watching film, he wants to be the best. He’s a competitor and his teammates feed off his energy. He makes us all better as an organization and we are blessed he’s going to be our quarterback for years to come.”
What makes Mahomes so special? Let’s look at a couple of reasons why. We could give you 503 reasons, but that’ll take up too much time. The first reason is that Mahomes played likes he is never out of a ballgame. During the divisional round playoff game against the Texans and their own superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson, Mahomes and the Chiefs were getting their rear ends waxed all over the field, falling behind 24-0. Mahomes and the Chiefs shrugged off the deficit to win going away with a 51-24 victory.

He would slay the comeback dragon twice more during the playoffs to lead Kansas City to the ballclub’s first Super Bowl win since Super Bowl IV when the Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 23-7.
The reason why Mahomes and Kansas City do not feel they are ever out of a game is because of the passing accuracy that No. 15 exhibits. In two years as a full-time starter, Mahomes has completed 66 (2018) and 65 (2019) percent of his passes during the regular season. And because he is so accurate in passing the football Mahomes rarely turns the ball over during his game air-raids.
In his first year as a full-time starter, Mahomes threw the football nearly 600 times (580 passing attempts) and wound up with just 12 interceptions. Mahomes was even better during the 2019 regular season in playing keep away from defenders, throwing just five picks in nearly 500 (484) passing attempts. While he’s been a careful caretaker of the football, Mahomes has managed to light up the scoreboard as well, tossing 76 touchdowns in just two seasons, including throwing for 50 scores in 2018.
It was in 2018 that Mahomes put the rest of the NFL on notice of what is to come. Mahomes passed for 5,097 yards, 50 TDS, and earned himself the league’s regular MVP honors. While he did not put up the gaudy numbers the year before, Mahomes was more than solid in 2019, passing for 4,031 yards and 26 touchdowns. He was just as hot in the postseason, passing for 1,474 yards and 13 touchdowns against two picks.
Then there is the added dimension of running with the football that Mahomes can utilize at any given moment. Not only is he probably the purest passer in the NFL, but Mahomes (now that the Texans and Titans have received the memo) also is not afraid to make plays with his feet. His knack to make the right plays at the right time makes Mahomes a special kind of talent.
“Getting this deal done has been a priority for us for quite a while now,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said. “I’d like to thank Chris Cabott and Leigh Steinberg for their efforts and patience, along with Brandt Tilis and Chris Shea on my staff. I’d also like to recognize Clark Hunt, Mark Donovan and Coach Reid who have all been incredibly supportive while we’ve worked though the details. I’ve said from the beginning that Patrick is one of the most impressive players I’ve ever scouted, but I don’t think anyone could have envisioned everything he’s brought to our football team and community. His abilities are so rare, and to couple that with an incredible personality is outstanding. We’re going to continue to do everything we can to surround him with talent, and this deal provides us more flexibility to do that. He’s obviously an integral part to our success and we’re thrilled he’s going to be the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs for a long time.”
