The stage was set for the classic crosstown showdown between storied CIF Los Angeles City Section powers Crenshaw and Dorsey. The excitement had been building all week from players, students, and alumni.
“It’s a rivalry, it’s a big rivalry,” Dorsey coach Paul Knox said after his team’s Coliseum League opener last week. “It doesn’t matter what the records of the teams are. Both us are playing for the pride of the community. The guys all know each other. They’ve with each other all their lives and are going to know each other the rest of their lives, so you get to brag, really, for the rest of your life, if win that game.”
Now it was finally time to play the game. Dorsey was eager to try and spoil Crenshaw homecoming, but that worked to no avail in a 41-0 blowout loss to the Cougars. Crenshaw jumped on Dorsey from the opening kickoff.
Crenshaw went on a first quarter scoring fest, taking a quick 21-0 lead in the period. Crenshaw wide receiver Davien Fisher made his mark on the game earlier with two scores, the most impressive was a 76-yard touchdown reception after a sudden change of possession interception by Nolan Grisby deep in the Cougars’ territory.
Coach Knox and his Dorsey Dons just didn’t have an answer this night to slow down Crenshaw’s momentum. There were little sparks each time Jermale Jefferson had an opportunity to return a kickoff and possible break one with his world class speed. However, Crenshaw’s defense continued to apply pressure on Dorsey quarterback Noah Whitney, forcing the Dons signal-caller into throwing two first half interceptions.
The Cougars’ stout defense also limited Dorsey’s big-play ability all night.
The second quarter was not much different with Cougars getting a blocked punt into the end zone after Dorsey was backed up deep in their own territory because of all kinds of problems they were having. Crenshaw’s Marcus Walton got his hands on the ball on the ball to block the punt and Trevion Thomas recovered it in the end zone for the score, making it 27-0.
Crenshaw’s defense kept making plays all night to keep the Dons out of scoring position. The Cougars had no such issue, scoring 20 points in the second quarter to lead at half, 41-0, a lead that eventually became the game’s final score.
Crenshaw’s coach Garett should be given a big feather in his cap for having Cougars ready to face such a tough non league schedule to prepare his team for league play. This is the best 2-4 team in the city. The Cougars are primed to breeze through the Coliseum League, especially after passing this test with flying colors.
These two teams should be on opposite side of brackets when the playoffs hit so there won’t be a revenge game this year. So we will all have to await until next year’s game come around with the buzz going down to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd and Jackie Robinson Stadium in 2014.
Next week Crenshaw (3-4, 2-0) will host West Adams (0-5, 0-2). Dorsey (3-4, 1-1) will travel to Locke (5-2, 1-1) for a 3 p.m. game.
