It’s only October but there was a playoff match up as Dorsey hosted Venice for their earlier homecoming game. Venice came into Jackie Robinson Stadium and confiscated the crown in a 31 – 29 thriller. Venice’s defense stepped up big in the second half, forcing three turnovers (2 fumbles, 1 interception) in the red zone to stop Dorsey scoring opportunities.
Dorsey was on the 14-yard line, licking their chops for a scoring opportunity before quarterback Noah Whitney was picked off in the endzone by Venice defense back Leon Stewart that proceeded 103 yards for a touchdown in 3rd quarter & 1 point lead 16-15 with 5:55 showing on clock.
Whitney had a record breaking night passing for the Dons with four touchdowns pass (87 yards, 54 yards, 51 yards, 12 yards) and 345 yards.
The headline was prime for the taking by either team. Dorsey battled back after wide receiver Jermale Jefferson #6 took a swing pass behind line of scrimmage for 54 yards touchdown that brought game within 2 points after the score and the successful two point conversion at 3:15 left in fourth quarter of regulation. Jefferson was a key performer being recipient of three touchdowns for the Dons.
Venice used its ground game to eat the clock up when it could behind running backs #5 Alijah Lee & #22 Joseph “Bruiser” Dews. The duo had over 200 plus yards for night. Quarterback Alexander Diamont brought his legs and scrambling ability to aid in the win with a rushing touchdown and an emphatic 2-point conversion that ended in a big collision at the pylon.
“The Dons were talking a lot, and pissed us off,” Diamont said. “Then we let out the beast!”
The dust had settled and Time Warner Cable picked the right game of week to be at for all the excitement you could ask for. Venice head coach Angelo Gaskin was pleased with his team performance.
“It’s about wins, not yards,” Gaskin said. “We survived tonight and got a big win.”
These two teams should make some noise as they move through their own league games.
Next week all teams enter league play, Dorsey (2-3) will travel to Ranch Dominguez Prep (1-4). Venice (3-2) will host Hamilton (2-3) on Oct 11th.
