INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Numbers don’t lie. But they also can skew the totality of a picture. Los Angeles Rams second-year quarterback Stetson Bennett didn’t have a sterling day at the office in the team’s preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys at SoFi Stadium.
Bennett threw four interceptions. But he battled. He showed grit. Despite the passing hiccups, Bennett displayed the kind of leadership that helped him guide the University of Georgia to two national championships. He didn’t quit.
As a result of his resilience, Bennett managed to lead the Rams to a 13-12 win against the Cowboys, thanks to a 6-yard touchdown pass that he flipped to Miller Forristall with four seconds left in the game.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said after the game that the interceptions Bennett threw will serve as a learning tool.
“The first two were tough because those are kind of occupational hazards. He will be able to learn from them,” McVay remarked. “The second two, we have to be able to make better decisions. On his third one, our X fell so that safety didn’t have any work. He ended up coming off. We had a play that we really liked there. The last one, he’s got a high cross.”
“He has to change the way that he’s layering that ball, but he is a resilient guy. All of them are ones that he can learn from, and I thought he did a really good job of being able to keep us ahead of the sticks [and] really moving us down the field,” McVay added.
Stetson completed 24-of-38 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. Not great numbers, but good enough to get the job done. The touchdown pass thrown by Bennett was a great walk-off moment for the team.
“It was fourth down and they kind of covered us front side,” said Bennett. “Got to the back, felt somebody kind of off my back and knew that fourth down. We got to go and spun out and [TE] Miller [Forristall] did a great job with the scramble drill.”
The preseason football game between the Rams and the Cowboys served as a re-introduction to Bennett. Bennett was a hot commodity when he left Georgia and made himself available for the draft. .

The Rams drafted Bennett in the 2023 NFL Draft, taking the passer in the fourth round. Due to undisclosed personal reasons, Bennett did not see the light of day on the football field during his rookie season.
Bennett was virtually a no-show during his rookie campaign. This year has been different for both Bennett and the ballclub. Bennett has been fully engaged during training camp.
With three preseason games before the regular season kicks in, McVay gave Bennett a full look of what the young signal-caller can do. Bennett started the game strong, completing four of his first five passes and leading the Rams to a 28-yeard field goal.
On the team’s opening drive, Bennett ran for five yards on a fourth-down play that showed off his mobility.
He even produced a couple of nice throws on the Rams’ second possession. But things started to unravel a bit for Bennett. He threw two picks in the first half with one interception in the red zone just before halftime. Bennett threw another interception in the third quarter.

His fourth pick came later in the game. Bennett said there is value in being able to play through his miscues.
“They were just… again, you don’t play for so long and you see things, like I said, and you know that it’s happening but you still kind of pull the trigger and it’s like, ‘Ah,’ and then you learn from it and it’s like just these little things in your brain to where you don’t throw it or you do throw it,” Bennett said.
He continued, “I think I learned a lot of those things because you know, most of them, if it makes sense, I did see them and it was like, ‘Oh no,’ but you still pull the trigger, right? It’s all those reps that I’ve missed in the past year, not making excuses, but there are things that definitely will be and need to be cleaned up.”
