Inglewood, CA (News4usOnline) – The Los Angeles Rams used a dash of defense, a good helping of offensive playmaking, and a bit of luck to beat the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Sept. 27.
The defense came in the form of safety Kam Curl, who handed Colts quarterback Daniel Jones his first and second interceptions of the year.
From the offensive perspective, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford made the plays when they counted. Stafford completed 29 of 41 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns, including connecting with wide receiver Tutu Atwell on a 88-yard pass play for a touchdown with 1:33 remaining in the game.

“It was a big one,” Stafford said about the pass play to Atwell. “Obviously, it was a great route by ‘Tu’ [Tutu Atwell]. He slipped his guy, made him fall down and it was a hell of a job finishing it off. Not number one in the progression, that’s for sure, but lets you know that you have to stay alive whenever your time comes to make a play. He obviously made it for us. It was a huge play for us.”
As far as the luck part, well that would come courtesy of wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, who dropped what should have been a 76-yard touchdown pass by allowing the ball to drop out of his hands just before he cross the goal line. As a result, the play wound up being a touchback.
“I think first, he made a heck of a catch on that play to get to the ball there,” Jones said of Mitchell. “Incredible, incredible catch. Tough play for sure. After such a tremendous effort and just lost the ball there at the end, but I feel for him. I know he hurts with that, but he’ll bounce back and he’s a hardworking guy.”
Whatever it was, there were a plethora of contributing factors that played a part of the Rams’ win.
“We’re not a boring team to watch, I guess,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said. “Our guys just did a great job. What an amazing credit to so many guys but you talk about complementary ball, you’re talking about just handling the ebbs and flows. That’s a damn good football team that’s played really well.”
For the second time in the last two weeks, the Rams concluded a game with a dramatic finish. Unlike their trip to Philadelphia where a blocked field goal at the end of the game wiped out their unblemished record, the Rams claimed victory against the Colts at SoFi Stadium with a offensive proficiency and timely defense.
The offense of the Rams generated 462 total yards. The defense stepped up during the first series of the game with Curl handing Jones his first turnover of the season with a pass theft. The Rams forced the Colts into a three turnover day as well.
Of his two interceptions on the day, Curl said ideally that is the way that you’d would want to start and end a game.

“It’s huge,“ Curl said. “That’s how you start the game; fast and finish the game in the end to win the game. I just, you know, thank [defensive coordinator Chris] Shula for putting us in that car and putting me in position, and thank God for giving me the ability to make a play.”
With the score tied at 20-20, Stafford calmly dropped back to pass and heaved an alley-oop pass in the direction of Atwell.
Atwell put his mittens on the ball and sped down the sideline to the endzone to punctuate the long touchdown pass with little time left in the game to give Los Angeles (3-1) a 27-20 lead.
The game wasn’t over. Yet. The Colts had an opportunity to answer. But Curl had something to say about that, intercepting Daniel Jones for the second time in the game to secure the Rams’ third win of the season.

“He’s been a stud,” McVay remarked. “The guy, he’s a grown man. He made play after play and then obviously made the pick to be able to get the offense the ball back and ultimately close the game out. What a stud, so glad to have him. I love Kam Curl.”
There were several points during the the game where the Colts looked to wrestle control of the contest. Each time, the Rams responded.
From Curl’s timely picks to a huge 10-yard touchdown catch by wide receiver Davante Adams just before the first half ended, the Rams dialed up and executed the right plays at the right time.
“You could just see it everybody’s eyes,” Adams said. “I wish everybody was able to be be in the huddle and just feel the confidence that every person has, the amount of communication that we have. Kyren [Williams] is our fireball. He’s getting everybody fired up. I’m bringing in with the veteran leadership. Puka [Nacua] is in his own world, locked in, doing his thing, and Matthew leading the show. Everybody’s got something.”
