IINGLEWOOD (News4usonline) – Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay all but shut everything down for quarterback Matthew Stafford for the season.
During his postgame press conference following the Rams falling in defeat 27-23 to the Seattle Seahawks, McVay was asked if Stafford’s season over with considering the team played the veteran quarterback on the injured reserve list.
McVay didn’t mince words with his response.

“He’s got a spinal cord contusion. That’s an injury that is anywhere between…there’s a good chance that’s probably the case,” McVay remarked.
McVay didn’t add anything else about Stafford’s medical situation. However, those words said it all. With the ballclub not likely to make the postseason, the Rams sitting Stafford for the rest of the season is a smart move.
Stafford has been beset with injuries this season, which has affected his play. In nine games, Stafford completed 68 percent of his passes for 2,087 yards and 10 touchdowns.
During his first season with the Rams after spending 12 seasons playing for the Detroit Lions, Stafford made good on 67 percent of his passes for 4,886 yards and 41 touchdowns during the regular season.
In 17 games during the 2021 NFL regular season, Stafford was sacked just 30 times. Through nine games this season, Stafford was officially put on his backside 29 times. Eventually, those hits catch up. Besides his obvious neck injury, Stafford has had to get well and cleared from the NFL’s concussion protocol leading up to this moment.
Stafford, who led the Rams to a 23-20 win against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, signed a multi-year contract in March to stay on as the Rams quarterback.
