Eric Bieniemy has been with the Kansas City Chiefs for eight seasons. This is his third year working as offensive coordinator for the ballclub. And yet, when it comes to head coaching vacancies, none has popped up in his favor.
The NFL had seven head coaching openings this offseason. They are all filled now. Two of those jobs went to minority coaches. Unfortunately, Bieniemy was not one of the chosen ones.
For all the talk and discussions about the qualifications checklist, Bieniemy’s football resume speaks with a loud and clear volume. In two of the three seasons that he has worked under head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs has played in a Super Bowl game. His star pupil, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was named the MVP for his play during the 2018 regular season.
All Mahomes did that season was toss 50 touchdowns and throw for 5,097 yards with just 12 interceptions. Those are video game numbers. Then he comes back and wins the Super Bowl LIV MVP after leading the Chiefs to a comeback 31-20 victory against the San Francisco 49ers.
Mahomes and the Chiefs had the No. 1 total and pass offense in the NFL in 2020. Before Kansas City knocked off the Cleveland Browns and the Buffalo Bills to make it back to the Super Bowl, Mahomes passed for 4,740 yards and 38 touchdowns against six interceptions. And yet, Bieniemy can’t seem to buy a serious head coaching offer.
It’s not like his coaching credentials don’t validate his thirst to be a head coach. Before becoming offensive coordinator, Bieniemy worked under Reid as a running back coach. He’s bounced back from the college ranks (UCLA, Colorado) and done other NFL gigs (Minnesota Vikings. The California native played nine seasons in the NFL before he went into coaching.
So far, it appears as if Bieniemy has hit a glass ceiling in opportunities for advancement. With all of this going on, Bieniemy is focused on the task at hand and that’s to help Kansas City win another Super Bowl.
