Team USA women got their first run of the Sochi Olympics. And by the sounds of it, they’re ready to get this gold-medal party started. The bobsledding group, anonymous to many around the world, talked about what it felt like after going through their initial run.
The biggest name of the group is track and field star Lolo Jones. It was a controversial pick to select the glamorous Jones to the bobsledding team as critics and haters cried about her being on the team.
Jones fielded questions about making the transition from track to bobsledding.
“I’m a very technical person because I’m a hurdler, so that helped me to break it down,” Jones said. “I don’t think it’s as easy as people assume. I think USA Bobsled just does a great job of recruiting some of the top track and field athletes in the world and so we make it look easy, but there are definitely moments at practice where we were pretty frustrated while trying to get the technique down.”
Jones was also asked if she felt any pressure.
“Uh uh. It’s completely different; it’s absolutely different,” said Jones. “There’s no pressure. It’s Jaz’s first Olympics so she’s just focused on having a good experience and just executing, that’s the goal for her. For me, it’s just all about being the best teammate and giving her the best and most amazing push and velocity that she can ever ask and hope for, and that’s what we’ve been doing.”

It looks like adding Jones to the team will prove to be a great addition to an already strong team that includes Aja Evans, another track and field star who has athletic genes all over the place with one uncle playing in the NFL and another who used to round the bases as an MLB star.
The support she has received from her family has been great for her, she said.
“I idolize my brother and my uncle, and to have such great figures in my life supporting me and saying that this is bigger than anything else in life that they’ve accomplished kind of gives me goose bumps,” Evans said. “It’s empowering to have that much support, it just keeps driving me more and more.”
Jazmine Fenlator runs the bobsled ship as the pilot. Fenlator has been at this bobsledding thing for quite some time and could very well be the key to Team USA’s chances of achieving the gold. Fenlator said the team is looking forward to the competition.
“We’re hungry,” Fenlator said. “We’re competitors and that’s what we do. We’re representing one of the best nations in the world, and I’m biased, but one of the best nations ever, and we’re hoping to sweep the podium. That’s what we want, to see three American flags. But at the end of the day, we’re super proud of how far we’ve come and we prepared ourselves as best as possible to represent our nation and everyone back home. At the end of the day we’re going to hold our heads high.”
