SAN DIEGO-Like many people around the world scratching their itch in curiosity about the wild whenever they attend an enclosure full of God’s wonderful creations, I headed to the San Diego Zoo with my family on a recent trip seeking to find my own answers about what it really means to be in beast mode.
The San Diego Zoo is quite the experience that some animal lovers such as myself endorse as a treat. Outside of experiencing a live safari run through in Africa or exploring someplace in Asia, this is about as best as it gets in getting an up close and personal encounter with a full-blown mane lion or taking a peek at the cute, cuddly Koala.
If you’re ever in the area catching up with the breeze of the Pacific Ocean , here is my list of 10 reasons why you should plan a trip to visit the San Diego Zoo:
1. Big Cats. There’s nothing more exhilarating than catching a live glimpse of nature’s more ferocious predators than tracking the eyes of the pride of Africa in the lion or trying to lock focus with a jaguar. The Big Cats have always been a favorite of mine. The Big Cats Trail is where its at with the rare Snow Leopard being on display as well as South America’s Jaguar.
You’ll get your eyes full with the two mountain lions roaming around their habitat. But the big show comes when Simba (lion) decides to throw back his head and launches into the deep, throaty roar that has made him the mythical King of the jungle.
2. Giant Panda. The China exports are at the top of the list of must-see when you attend the San Diego Zoo. Why? The endangered species causes a stir with those unmistakable black and white mixture of colors on its furry body. Because they are so popular, the wait can be long to get inside the compound to see them. Luckily, that was not the case for me and my family. we were able to whiz right on in within minutes and received an eyeful of the gentle giants eating their landmark grub of bamboo.
3. The Koala. The cute little guy from Australia is in full bloom in the zoo’s new Australian Outback exhibit. The best times to catch them look like to be in the evening when all things wild start to get more lively. Then again, it really doesn’t matter much when you arrive at the zoo to watch this little furry creature. That’s because the Koala sleeps more than 20 hours a day taking a nap. That’s a whole lot of sleep! I got lucky on my trip as there several Koalas mingling around, eating tree leaves, stretching and doing what Koalas do.
4. Variety. There is a lot to do and see at the San Diego Zoo. It’s worth the trip!
