Clippers earn a team win against Cavs

LOS ANGELES (News4usonline) – You might say that Norman saved the day for the Los Angeles Clippers. Facing one of the NBA’s hottest teams in the Cleveland Cavaliers, a squad that ran over the Los Angeles Lakers on Nov. 6, the Clippers put a stop to that groove.

Norman Powell scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to help the Clippers prevail over the Cavaliers with a narrow 119-117 win at Crypto.com Arena. No other player for the Clippers reached double figures in scoring in the fourth quarter, a period that saw Los Angeles outscore Cleveland 31-30.

Kevin Love tried to turn back the hands of the clock b y scoring 11 of his 17 points in the fourth period as the young Cavaliers basically matched points with the Clippers. Powell connected on 3 of 4 field goal attempts in the final quarter while also chipping in six of the seven free throws he attempted in the period. Powell wound up with 17 points for the game.

His performance off the bench really shows off the depth of the Clippers. The Clippers, led by Paul George, had six players to score in double-digits in the team’s sixth win of the season.

The Clippers had to withstand the scoring barrage of Donovan Mitchell, who was traded to the Cavaliers in the offseason from the Utah Jazz. Mitchell scored 30 points in 38 minutes of action, hitting 10 of his 15 shot attempts, including making eight 3-pointers. This game was entertaining from the start.

The first half proved. With Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James (both hail from Florida State) sitting courtside, the Clippers and the Cavaliers went toe-to-toe to see which team would have a better or more spectacular play than the other. Missing in all the fun was Kawhi Leonard, who sat on the bench cheering on his Clippers teammates.

Besides Mitchell, the Clippers had to offset the play of former USC Trojans star Evan Mobley, who finished the game with 26 points and eight rebounds. They also had to contend with the human jumping jack in Cleveland center Jarrett Allen, who only produced 10 points, but grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds.

It’s early in the NBA season, but Cleveland is already making noise. The Cavaliers have the second-best record in the Eastern Conference, right behind the Milwaukee Bucks. The Clippers, on the other hand, have gotten off to an uneven start. The win against the Cavaliers put them over the .500 mark at 6-5.

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue went nine deep into his bench in facing off against the Cavaliers. All nine players got into the scoring column. The biggest difference in the evenly played game was in the turnover department.

The Clippers forced Cleveland into committing 17 turnovers, resulting in 25 points for Los Angeles. The Clippers, meanwhile, managed to keep their miscues to a minimum, turning the ball over just nine times in 48 minutes of playing time.

Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the field. Cleveland made 51 percent of their shots, while the Clippers connected on half of their field goals.
