A signed Los Angeles Lakers jersey worn by Kobe Bryant during his MVP season sold for a record $5.8 million last week, according to Sotheby’s.
The auction house said the jersey, worn in 27 games during the 2007–08 season, is “the most valuable Kobe Bryant game-worn jersey to ever appear on the market.” It set the record for Kobe Bryant memorabilia, and became the second-most valuable basketball jersey ever sold, Sotheby’s said.
“The image of Kobe wearing this particular jersey during the NBA playoffs has permeated in popular culture, reprinted on murals, books, newspapers and more, and has become a symbol of his fierce determination and passion that has resonated with audiences across the world,” Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Streetwear and Modern Collectables, said in a statement.
“Sotheby’s is proud to now hold the record for any game-worn items of sports memorabilia from basketball’s trifecta: Kobe, Jordan, and LeBron,” Wachter said.
Last month, Sotheby’s sold the jersey worn by LeBron James for the 2013 NBA Finals Game 7 victory against the Miami Heat for $3.6 million. In September 2022, Sotheby’s set the record for any game-worn item of sports memorabilia at $10.1 million for Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey.
