(News4usonline) – Actor Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler have worked together for years. From Fruitvale Station to Sinners, the Jordan-Coogler partnership was formed to take Hollywood as their industry’s dynamic duo.
Manifestations of this longtime collaboration are the two Academy Awards the two men won at the 98th Academy Awards, the film industry’s Super Bowl.
Both men had the look and reaction of shock and genuine disbelief that they were able to take home the top prizes in their respective categories for their work on Sinners.
Jordan appeared absolutely stunned that his name was called for Best Actor.

“Man. God is good,” Jordan remarked in picking up his honor. “God is good. Hey mama, what’s up? Y’all know how I feel about my mother, and my father is here. Pops, where you at? My dad, my dad came in from Ghana. He flew in from Ghana to be here. My brother, my sister’s here, my family. I want to thank Warner Brothers.
“I want to thank Mike and Pam for believing in this dream, this vision of Ryan Coogler, and betting on the culture, and betting on original ideas and original artistry. You’re an amazing, amazing person. I’m so honored to call you a collaborator and a friend. You gave me the opportunity and space for me to be seen.”
Coogler, who earned his award for writing (original screenplay) was just as shook up about winning.
What’s up? Please, please, please. Please sit down. Cause I’m very nervous and they gonna play me off,” Coogler said in his acceptance speech. “I grew up in Oakland, Richmond, California, and we can talk a lot. I want to thank the Academy for thinking of our movie that came out almost a year ago. This is an incredible honor.”
Sinners is one of the most memorable films the Hollywood industry has ever seen. The 16 Academy Award nominations for a nearly all-Black cast validates this fact. The fact that the Ryan Coogler-directed crime/horror movie was able to garner all this acclaim mean a big deal to the industry itself and to the culture.
“I want to thank everybody that was involved with this movie, starting with Warner Bros.,” Coogler went on to say. “Mike and Pam, you’re here. David’s here somewhere. Everybody, all my cast and crew, please stand up. You guys are amazing. You guys are amazing. Yo, you guys…oh my God. You all are winners in my book.”
The four Oscars that Sinners picked up at the 98th Academy Awards ceremony should not be seen as a let down in any shape of form. There were great movies and filmmakers all around.

But the fact that Sinners generated more nominations than any film in the history of the Academy Awards speaks volumes about Coogler, Jordan and the wonderful cast and crew that came together to put this story on the big screen.
And what a marvelous treat it has been. Sinners became the game-changing film in 2025. The film made nearly $280 million ($279, 989, 632) here in the United States, and sold $369,424, 281 worth of tickets overall, including overseas, according to Box Office Mojo.
Those are almost earth-shattering numbers for a horror flick. With the success of Sinners, both Coogler and Jordan have elevated their platforms as director and actor, respectively. It’s no surprise that Coogler and Jordan both made Oscar magic on the same project.
Both men have collaborated in the past on groundbreaking films such as Black Panther, Fruitvale Station, and the Creed series. Starring as twin brothers Smoke and Stack, Jordan had to pull off doing double duty worth of work.
Thank goodness that Sinners did not fall trap to The Color Purple syndrome where Steven Spielberg’s reckoning domestic abuse drama with another largely Black ensemble was snubbed entirely after receiving 11 Oscar nominations. This would be a lesson learned from Hollywood.
As for the awards themselves, these were not groundbreaking moments, but they sure felt like them. Coogler becomes the second Black American to win the writing (Best Original Screenplay) honor as Jordan Peele broke that barrier with his Oscar for his work in Get Out.

In the Best Actor category, the breakthrough for Black actors was set by the late great Sidney Potier. Before Jordan nabbed his Best Actor win, you could count on one hand the number of Black thespians to win this coveted award.
It was Potier, Denzel Washington (Training Day), Jamie Foxx (Ray), Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), and Will Smith (King Richard).
“Y’all. I stand here because of the people that came before me: Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith,” Jordan said. “To be amongst those giants, amongst those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my guys. Thank you, everybody in this room and everybody at home for supporting me over my career. I feel it.”
Now, you have to use a second hand when you’re discussing the number of Black actors being on the top of their game. Jordan thanked the cast for his award, particularly giving homage to the two women (Hailee Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku) who played the love interests of Smoke and Stack in Sinners.
“I would like to thank my incredible cast,” said Jordan. “Wunmi, thank you so much for giving Smoke the opportunity to be him. Hailee at home, you know, she’s, you know, getting ready to have a baby right now. Thank you so much for being the other, other half of Stack. Miles, Delroy, Jayme, everybody.”
