Grambling completes sweep of Southern

BATON ROUGE, La. | The Grambling State University volleyball team kept its winning streak going as the Lady Tigers won back-to-back matches and completed a season sweep of their rivals with a 3-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Southern on Monday night at Clifford Seymour Gymnasium.

Grambling State (10-15 overall, 7-7 SWAC) won the match, 25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23. The Lady Tigers earned a 3-1 win on Sunday at Alcorn State and currently sit in fifth place in the SWAC standings.

The Lady Tigers started the match by making a statement with a service ace by Kalee Cadwell. Grambling State went on an 8-0 run before easily sealing the first set, 25-13. GSU kicked off the second set scoring seven points in a row. The Lady Tigers finally allowed Southern to catch its breath, but the comeback wasn’t enough as Grambling State snuck away with set two, 25-20.

Southern staged a comeback and earned a 25-21 third-set victory over GSU- A one-set win was not nearly enough as the Lady Tigers sealed the match 25-23. The Lady Tigers finished with 50 kills, 23 errors and 182 total attacks. Gillian Jones led the offense with 15 kills and three blocks.

Tamaira Johnson followed with 11 kills, two aces and five blocks. Kalee Cadwell registered 22 assists, 16 digs and three aces, and Jada Taylor completed the night with a double-double of 32 digs and 11 assists, while recording a pair of service aces.

Grambling State registered 100 digs, 47 assists and nine blocks. Southern finished with 96 digs, nine blocks and one ace. Kendall Dutton led the Lady Jaguars with 13 kills and two blocks. Kyla Carrier recorded 21 assists and 14 digs. Trenity Lundy registered 28 digs- Southern finished with 46 kills, 28 errors and 184 total attacks.

Grambling State returns home for a Senior Night match-up against Prairie View A&M on Sunday. The senior night ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m., with first serve is set for 6 p.m. at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
