San Francisco, Calif. – Michaela Onyenwere has earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors, the Conference office announced Monday. It’s the third-career weekly honor for Onyenwere and the 63rd all-time for UCLA Women’s Basketball.
Onyenwere becomes the second Bruin to earn Pac-12 weekly honors this season, as sophomore guard Charisma Osborne won the first Player of the Week honor of the 2020-21 season on Nov. 30. The Bruins are now the only team in the Conference with multiple weekly honorees this season.
Onyenwere earned the weekly accolade on the heels of No. 9 UCLA’s victory over then-No. 8 Oregon at Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday (Jan. 3). The senior had a dominant offensive performance, scoring a career-high 33 points on 12-for-20 shooting. She capped her stellar day by following her own miss for the put-back layup late in the fourth quarter to put UCLA ahead, 73-71, which proved to be the eventual game-winning basket. She also went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. It was her third-career 30+ point game and eighth-straight game in double figures to start the season.
The senior from Aurora, Colo., also notched 10 rebounds for her 27th-career double-double. She added a pair of assists and one steal in the victory.
The performance helped the Bruins snap Oregon’s 27-game winning streak. It was also the Ducks’ first home loss since Feb. 22, 2019, when UCLA came back from 22 points down to secure the road victory.
