Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Arrives

Los Angeles, CA (News4usonline) – After much awaited time, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art has officially landed. 

As Exposition Park’s latest addition as well as the creation of film mogul George Lucas and successful businesswoman Mellody Hobson, it is safe to say there were a great number of expectations surrounding what this particular space had to offer. 

How could it differ from the other museums and in what ways could it maintain the public’s interest? Due to this being Lucas’ co-creation some audiences assumed the museum to be completely something different and some may be in the same position once it is opened. 

I had the privilege to visit the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art Neighborhood Preview Day at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art and I am here to clear the air on any confusion.  

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is in fact not just a “Star Wars” museum but exactly what is in the name. While this is obvious, by just the sneak peak the museum does an excellent job of not only providing context of what inspires stories such as Lucas’ popular Sci-Fi fantasy world, but the evolution of storytelling and narrative. 

As stated by Hobson and Lucas, their goal is to showcase the strength of storytelling through visuals not just with words. Guests will be able to experience this not only through the official museum, but within the library across the way and the garden that helps elevate the experience. 

There is an exhibit on the very first floor guests can and I would recommend should start with the only exhibit at this level, The History of Narrative Art: Heroes, Myths, The Sacred. 

This particular exhibit does an excellent job of what would be considered setting the tone for the museum as providing historical proof and context to narration being a forefront in what makes us human. 

There is no photography or recording allowed. However, I appreciate this decision as it at least allowed myself to really take in what is being portrayed in that exhibit but to understand the campus altogether.

The curation that is presented to us is faithful in terms of its inclusivity for sharing the human experiences by implementing ancient works of art beyond the Roman and Greek Empire by including works from Assyria, the Aztec empire, and this inclusion of Mosque architecture. 

However, this isn’t even the most shocking and interesting aspect. You will find a few of the installations to be digital which may be a risky move to some, but I believe it fits with what Lucas and Hobson want guests to take away after their visit through the entirety of the campus. 

That is to witness the evolution of visual narration and storytelling and how these previous works of art not only helped structure societies, they continue to inspire future artists and generations. 

The digital installations are simply fulfilling a job of bringing items that most would travel the globe to see here in their own backyard as well as placing a connection between modern technology and the subjectivity of art.

The remaining available floors consisted of murals on the fifth floor and an expansive amount of genres on the sixth. While the latter was done beautifully, I’d advised guests to expect to be here for a while longer than expected. 

Despite the mix of narrative genres each section does not shy away from the amount of art that is displayed which is quite pleasant as it feeds a lot of information and inspiration to museum goers. Some people would assume mixes like this may mean less inclusion in the sections which is understandable for time or duration. 

But I feel that it gives people what they are looking for there. From an extensive space dedicated to Norman Rockwell to manga, western, childhood illustration, photography and so much more. There is something everyone can enjoy and fans can of course witness certain props and costumes as a part of the first six ‘Star Wars’ films.

Based on this particular experience and order, it can be interpreted as more than just the evolution of narrative but the evolution of technology and art. Beginning with ancient myths and legends inscripted into what was once everyday architecture to the early days of comic strips attached to newspapers to the many art forms part of filmmaking.

It is safe to say consistent museum attendees and enjoyers will definitely be satisfied as the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a space that values the importance of art, what it teaches, and its impact on our communities. 

This extends beyond them just creating a museum but implementing a research library that holds special books and archival pieces and a garden/park seals the deal. While the library isn’t exactly the grandest size, its inclusion is important as it increases the chances of more people gaining access to this kind of information. 

The garden and park is quite spacious and a perfect spot for family, friends, couples, and even for some independent time. With the obvious smaller stage located at the far end I could see a bright future for potential small performances and community events. 

This campus is a well needed and welcomed addition to Exposition Park serving as a safe and educational space of learning. While the area can be a whole field trip I can definitely see visits here can be enough for one day of wonder and pleasantry.
