Wayans Brothers revives ‘Scary Movie’ franchise

(News4usOnline) – The Scary Movie franchise made its return to big screen theaters after a long 13-year hiatus, with the 5th installment released in 2013. This parody movie franchise also saw the return of the iconic comedic family of the Wayans brothers.

The Wayans brothers have been absent from the franchise since they last appeared and were involved in Scary Movie 2 which came out in 2001. After playing such a pivotal role in the success of the first two films, the Wayans family were not included in the following sequels.

After two decades, the Wayans family finally returned to the franchise and has their hands all over Scary Movie 6. Scary Movie 6 was nothing but filled with laughs. The comedy and jokes are reminiscent of the first two films of the franchise. It also included fellow original stars such as Regina Hall and Anna Faris characters in their iconic roles of Brenda and Cindy.

With the return of multiple original characters, the film had a lot of nostalgic feeling to it. All of the characters returning played a big role. 

Being a parody film, Scary Movie has always used popular horror films to incorporate in their imitations. With so much time passing from the last released film, there has been a plethora of horror movies and Scary Movie 6 took advantage. Comedy spoofs of films such as Final Destination, Halloween, Scream, Longlegs, Sinners, Get Out, and several more. 

Due to the fact it is a parody style movie, it is not expected to be the best movie ever. It heavily relies on comedy and to create a funny atmosphere for the audience. The Wayans family, in particular Marlon and Shawn Wayans who had heavy involvement in this film, have a unique style of comedy. 

It can be over the top here and there, and some scenes from Scary Movie 6 can definitely be seen as such. The question that has always been out there, is can their style of comedy translate in today’s era? Scary Movie and Scary Movie 2 were so successful because they worked in that era. 

This sixth film translates well enough to make the movie a success. There are enough jokes that pass to make it a fun watch. While the film did feel a bit all over the place in terms of the plot, the comedy makes up for it. 

Returning to the franchise after decades of being absent, the Wayans brothers had so much material at use to including the film itself, may have gotten caught trying to add too much.

Despite that, Scary Movie 6 was really fun to watch, and there is hope a seventh film is in the future. The Wayans returned to the franchise and has given enough spark to wonder how the next film would be. Horror movies themselves have seen an uptick in successful movies lately, after the success of Scary Movie 6, the Wayans can go in any direction they want.
