ANAHEIM – The Los Angeles Angels didn’t have a good of a season to celebrate. But their All-Star slugger Mike Trout sure did. Like he typically does, Trout came out for the abbreviated 2020 MLB season and did his thing the way he always does. And that’s being excellent.
Trout was named a recipient of a 2020 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger™ Award which is given to the best offensive players at each position in both the American and National Leagues. The award, which has been presented annually since 1980, is Trout’s eighth and the 25th overall for the Angels.
With the announcement, Trout becomes the first player to win the award eight times by their age-28 season. He is the fifth player to win at least eight Silver Sluggers in the American League, joining Alex Rodriguez (10), Manny Ramirez (9), Cal Ripken Jr. (8) and Wade Boggs (8). Additionally, Trout is the third Major Leaguer to win the award eight times as an outfielder, joining Barry Bonds (12) and Ramirez (8).
Trout extends his Angels franchise record with eight career Silver Sluggers. He broke Vladimir Guerrero’s previous Angels record of four (2004-07) after capturing his fifth award in 2016.
The New Jersey native finished the 2020 regular season, ranked among American League leaders with 17 home runs (3rd), 46 RBI (3rd), 28 extra-base hits (3rd), a .993 OPS (3rd), 41 runs scored (4th), 120 total bases (4th), a .390 on-base percentage (4th) and a .603 slugging percentage (4th). He also became the Angels all-time home run leader with his 300th career homer on Sept. 5.
Trout will receive his Silver Slugger Award during an on-field ceremony in the 2021 season.
The Silver Slugger Award winners were determined by a vote of Major League Baseball coaches and managers who named the players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in both the American and National Leagues in 2020.
Selections were based on a combination of offensive statistics, as well as the coaches’ and managers’ general impressions of a player’s overall offensive value. Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own teams.
