Dodgers win the World Series

(News 4 Us Online) – In winning their second straight World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers managed to do something that not too many clubs have done in the past. After rallying for a 5-4 win in Game 7 against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Dodgers became just the ninth team in Major League Baseball history to win a Game 6 and a Game 7 on the road.

This was an epic win by the Dodgers on so many fronts. Historically, the Dodgers become the first team since the New York Yankees to repeat as back-to-back champions. The Yankees went on a three-year title run from 1998 to 2000.

So, it’s been 25 years since the last MLB team has won the World Series in consecutive years. How does Dodgers manager Dave Roberts feel about it? Pretty good.

“I just think it just goes down to just trusting your players, and it’s nice when you can look down the roster and have 26 guys that you believe in and know that at some point in time their number’s going to be called,” Roberts said in his postgame press conference. “And that’s kind of what happened.”

Even considering the fact that the Dodgers were favored to win the World Series coming into their matchup against the Blue Jays, Los Angeles left home with a bit of vulnerability. The Blue Jays had won Game 4 and Game 5 and looked dominant doing so, had wrestled control of the series and headed home to play in front of their home crowd.

If the Dodgers were to get out of this deficit, it would be all hands on deck as contributors for Roberts and his team. That’s exactly what happened in Game 7. Everybody and everyone contributed to the Dodgers’ improbable victory.

Right out of the gate, the Dodgers were down 3-0, then 3-1. The Blue Jays’ lead increased to 4-2 before Los Angeles added runs in the eighth and ninth innings to push the game into an extra session.

And down 4-3 in the ninth inning, Miguel Rojas decided to bring his big boy hammer to the game and drilled a solo home run in the ninth inning to tie the ballgame at 4-4 to send the contest into extra innings.

Before Rojas hit his dramatic home run, it was Max Muncy, who had been struggling mightily at the plate, who cut into the Blue Jays’ lead with a blast to the outfield of his own. Mookie Betts, whose key hit in Game 6 won that contest, closed out the win for the Dodgers with a game-ending double play.

There were a lot of heroes for the Dodgers on this night, even for the series, as they managed to climb back from the depth of a potential epic series defeat to a near impossible win of the Fall classic.

Perhaps no Dodger epitomized hero ball more than pitcher Yoshiobu Yamamoto. Yamamoto pitched and won Game 2 and Game 6 for the Dodgers. He then turned around and gave the Dodgers a solid relief effort in Game 7 to help Los Angeles lock in its ninth franchise World Series and win the series MVP honors.

Roberts talked about the contributions he received from everyone to pitch in.

“Miggy Ro — I talk about the game honors you and right there the game honored him,” Roberts said. “He does things the right way and he deserved that moment. And what Yoshi did tonight is unprecedented in modern day baseball. Just the young guys coming out there with the arms and just the big plays and — again, it’s been a long season, man. We started out in Tokyo and ended up north of the border, so just proud of this group of guys.”
