Reiner was born March 6, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, and spent part of his childhood in New Rochelle before moving to Los Angeles at age 13. He was the son of legendary comedian and filmmaker Carl Reiner and actress and singer Estelle Reiner. He was the eldest of three children, including sister Annie Reiner, a poet and playwright, and brother Lucas Reiner, a painter, actor, and director.

An acclaimed filmmaker, actor, writer, and producer, Reiner rose to fame portraying “Meathead” on the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family. He later appeared in films such as Sleepless in Seattle and The Wolf of Wall Street.

As a director, Reiner became known for his versatility across genres, helming beloved films including the coming-of-age drama Stand by Me (1986), romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally (1989), and courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992), which earned an Academy Award nomination.

Following news of the couple’s deaths, tributes poured in from political leaders and public figures across the country.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom wrote on X that he and his wife, Jen, were “heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner,” praising Reiner as “the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love.”

Former President Barack Obama also shared condolences, writing that Reiner’s work reflected “a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the deaths “a devastating loss for our city and our country,” citing Reiner’s cultural impact and advocacy for social and economic justice.

The investigation remains ongoing.
