Herbert has successful surgery

(News4UsOnline) – Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent successful surgery on his non-throwing hand on Monday, according to a team statement.

The Chargers also announced that Herbert’s status for their upcoming Monday Night Football game against the Philadelphia Eagles is uncertain and will be determined later in the week.

Herbert and the Chargers are coming off a 31-14 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. Herbert appeared to have injured his left hand during the game, but wasn’t sure exactly when it took place.

“I’m not quite sure exactly,” Herbert commented after the Chargers recorded their eighth win of the season. I think it was one of the plays where I tried to scramble but I’d have to take a look at it. I think it must’ve been either a helmet or something like that, but I’d have to look at it to be exact.”

As far as what he thought his status would be after the procedure took place, Herbert was non-committal.

“I think they’re pretty hopeful actually,” Herbert remarked. “I think it’s one of those things where you just stabilize it. I’m not the doctor unfortunately, but they were hopeful so I think that’s a good thing.”

Against the Raiders, Herbert completed 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed the ball three times for a total of eight yards. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh liked the way that Herbert competed despite the injury he suffered.

I know he’s as tough as they come and they taped it up, [gave him a] glove and he played a great game,” Harbaugh said.

The biggest challenge with a hand injury is ball security, which Herbert acknowledged.

“I think ball security is at a paramount,” Herbert said. “I think I did a good enough job of that today in the pocket. Just getting the ball to the running backs so it’s just stuff to work on.”
