Rams run past Cardinals

(News4UsOnline) – The Los Angeles Rams got back into the win column with a 45-17 road win against the Arizona Cardinals. Running back Blake Corum was the lead catalyst in LA’s 10th win of the season (10-3), rushing for a career-high 128 yards and two touchdowns.

As a team, the Rams rushed for 253 yards (249 yards net) against the Cardinals. Corum had touchdown runs of 2 and 48 yards in the most spectacular day of his pro career. Just days earlier in a Week 13 road defeat to the Carolina Panthers, Corum rushed for a team-high 81 yards. 

The Rams totaled 153 yards (152 yards net) on the ground in that unexpected loss. After his big day against the Cardinals, Corum said talked about everything coming together for the offensive unit. 

“It was a blessing come true, but it’s something that we worked on all week, fixing what we needed fix from our loss, and we did that,” Corum said. “Starting with the offensive line, I mean they did a phenomenal job.” 

Quarterback Matthew Stafford bounced back from his three-turnover afternoon against Carolina to put on another passing clinic. And make a little more history. After taking a loss against the Panthers, Stafford and the Rams got back to the basics in beating the Cardinals. 

Stafford completed 22 of 31 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns. The three touchdowns thrown by Stafford has pushed him to 35 scores on the season. Stafford has thrown a touchdown in every game this season, and he surpassed Ben Roethlisberger to move into seventh place on the all-time passing completion list.  

Playing distributor with the football, Stafford threw to 10 different receivers with nine of the pass-catchers hauling in his throws. 

“When we’re at our best, we’re kind of dictating the terms and spreading the ball around,” Stafford said after the game in a postgame press conference. “I thought we had a great plan coming into the day, obviously executed it very well, in and out of the huddle. Great communication. And then the guys up front…they owned the line of scrimmage. And when you do that, we’ve got skilled guys that can make people pay, and just proud and happy for those guys upfront for the way they played.”

The victory was a total team effort, which Rams head coach Sean McVay commended. 

“Ulitmately, the guys did a great job,” McVay said. “Really proud of them. I think this a cool reflection of the coaching staff in general, too. It was a good step in the right direction, and now we’ve got to continue to build on this.”

Running the football well has been something the Rams have been building towards since the team drafted Kyren Williams in the fifth round in 2022 and Corum two years later in the third round. The dividends are paying off. 

“I just think guys are executing,” McVay said. “I think the runners are really running hard; I think they’re pressing it. They’re understanding exactly what the intent is. You know, I think Kyren [Williams] and Blake do a great job. Got to give a lot of credit to Ron Gould. And then also, I think, you know, the offensive line, obviously, has been key and critical. And it’s the offensive line, it’s the tight ends, it’s the receivers. The run game takes all eleven.”
